Did you know that the hottest time of the day is 3 pm, according to the Farmer’s Almanac? When the days are warm, it is suggested that seniors schedule indoor activities for the mid to late afternoon to avoid excessive heat exposure.
Vermont has had some steamy days this summer, but our weather of late has been fantastic! With health and safety in mind, these waning days of summer are a great time for seniors and their caregivers to enjoy being outdoors.
Bird Watching. For little or no money, bird watching can keep caregivers and seniors occupied and engaged throughout the summer. Whether viewing birds out a window, in a yard or nearby park or traveling to a wildlife refuge, bird watching is calming and fun.
Attend A Sporting Event. Major sporting events may be difficult for seniors to navigate, especially events hosted in large arenas where extensive walking, climbing, and sun exposure are required. Local sporting events tend to be more environmentally supportive to older adults; consider attending youth or recreational sports league games. Do you have a grandchild who just joined a soccer team? Bring a comfortable chair to one of their practices or games, kick back, and cheer from the sidelines.
Play Basic Yard Games. Competitive adults enjoy classic yard games. Caregivers and their seniors might run an informal summer tournament among friends or just between themselves. Select yard games that are low impact and appropriate for senior limitations. Some examples are cornhole, bean bag toss, croquet, shuffleboard, lawn bowling, horseshoes, and pickleball.
