Do you remember the food pyramid from the 90s? The USDA unveiled it in 1992 to give Americans a literal picture of what to eat. The pyramid-shaped graphic had a base of grains, then fruits and vegetables, then protein and dairy; the tippy top of the pyramid was comprised of fats, oils, and sweets.
The food pyramid was updated a few times over the years- always encouraging more grains and produce and fewer desserts- but in 2011, the pyramid was replaced by a plate. The USDA changed it to “MyPlate.”
March is National Nutrition Month. The importance of good nutritional habits for both caregivers and seniors cannot be understated! Healthy food choices keep us adequately fueled, immunity boosted, and less likely to have brain fog and fatigue. Three cheers for more energy!
March is also, of course, the start of sugaring season in Vermont, so in celebration, here is a recipe from www.myplate.gov for “Maple Sweet Potatoes.” Sweet potatoes, maple syrup, orange juice, and yogurt are a winning combination in this easy dish that can be made in the microwave.
